Founded in 2013, we are an association of former members of
the LDF (Local Defence Forces) and the FCA (An Forsa Cosanta Aitiuil). The FCA
was established in 1946 following the disbandment of the LDF at the end of the
Emergency period (WW 2). The FCA was a second line reserve to the Permanent
Defence Forces (PDF) as well as being a local defence force. An estimated five
thousand men and women from Co. Clare served in the FCA over its lifetime. In
2005 following restructuring of the Defence Forces the FCA was replaced by a
new force, the Reserve Defence Force (RDF) which is attached to Regular Army
units. This means that RDF members in Co. Clare are attached to either the 12th
Infantry Battalion based at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick or An Chead Cathalann
Coise, (the 1st Battalion) based at Dún Uí Mhaoilíosa, (Mellows Barracks),
Renmore, Galway. So for the first time in over seventy years there is now no
Military unit unique to Co. Clare. In order to ensure that the service given by
the LDF and the FCA in Co. Clare was not forgotten the Clare 22nd Battalion
Association was formed. Our Motto is Quivs Separabitî (Who will Separate us).
